Satsuma Kiriko: An 800-Year Legacy of the Shimazu Family
Satsuma Kiriko originated under Shimazu Nariakira, the 28th head of the Shimazu family, whose lineage spans 800 years. Once prized as formal gifts to feudal lords, Satsuma Kiriko pieces are also said to have been included among the wedding items of Princess Atsuhime when she married into the Tokugawa shogunate. Carrying this sense of elegance and depth across generations, that same brilliance has now been reimagined as contemporary jewelry.

Deep and Lustrous: The "Kinaka" Red of Satsuma Kiriko
"Kinaka" red is a special color achieved through numerous intricate processes using pure gold, requiring exceptional skill to produce. The rich color and soft glow created by layering thick colored glass are hallmarks of the refined brilliance unique to Satsuma Kiriko. This necklace features colored glass approximately twice the usual thickness. The thicker the glass, the greater the skill required to balance the depth of each cut with careful polishing. Each piece of glass was carefully assessed for its individual character to draw out a rich, dimensional gradient effect.

A One-of-a-Kind Gradient: Where Color Dissolves Into Light
Layer upon layer of color is built up in a kiln reaching temperatures of up to 1,500°C, then carved and polished with precision to within 0.1 millimeters. By cutting the thickly layered colored glass at a deep, gentle angle, a gradient effect emerges, where color gradually transitions into clarity. This remarkable depth and richness is a brilliance found only in Satsuma Kiriko.

A Reflection of Individual Brilliance, Worn Close to the Heart
"No two people are alike, and no two brilliances shine the same way." This asymmetrical heart motif was designed with that sentiment in mind. An arrangement of the traditional "spider web" pattern, long believed to capture good fortune, expresses the idea that each person shines as their own star. The noble, fiery glow of kinaka red becomes a talisman of sorts, worn close to the chest as a reminder of the strength, brilliance, and courage to move forward that already exists within you.

A Brilliance Found Nowhere Else
Since its founding, kay me has championed those who dare to take on new challenges. This philosophy comes together with Shimadzu Satsuma Kiriko in their first jewelry collaboration. Each piece is finished by skilled artisans using advanced techniques, with only about one piece completed per day. The result is an exceptionally rare creation, with a character and brilliance that can only be achieved through dedicated handcraftsmanship. Wear it, and let it quietly light the way as you move forward. A singular brilliance, found only here.
